Williams Schieffelin Claytor was born January 4th, 1908 in Norfolk, Virginia. He became a mathematician and an educator in the 1930s. He earned his A.B. and his M.A. from Howard University. He became the third African American to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics in 1933. In 1937 he was awarded a Rosenwald Fellowship and pursued post-doctoral studies at the University of Michigan .During World War II, Claytor served in the US. Army (1941-1945) where he taught in the field of Anti-Aircraft Artillery from December 1942 through December 1944. This is where he met David Blackwell. In 1947, Blackwell became Chairman of the Mathematics Department at Howard University and Claytor became a teacher there. In 1865, Claytor retired from Harvard University. Sadly two years later, Williams W. Schieffelin Claytor died. Although he worked long hours as a teacher he also worked as a researcher. He oublished two papers on his invention, the Claytor Curve.
