Astronaut Shannon Walker will be flying into space next year, but she is not going alone. Shannon Walker will be taking a watch worn by the, famous female aviator, Amelia Earhart. Amelia Earhart wore this watch during her two trans-Atlantic flights. Shannon Walker says she is “very excited and honored to fly the watch” and hopes “that by flying the watch people will become interested in the continuing story of women in aviation, and perhaps draw some new pilots to the field.” I think that this is great because Amelia Earhart was the first woman pilot to fly solo and having a part of her with you when you fly, is significant. Shannon Walker is not the only one flying with a part of Amelia Earhart, Astronaut Randy Bresnik, who is the grandson of Earhart’s only authorized photographer, is taking a scarf of Amelia’s with him aboard space shuttle Atlantis as part of STS-129, scheduled to launch in November 2009.
